STEAM PROGRAM EXPANDS AT HANDEL REGIONAL LIBRARY SYSTEM WITH FAIRY TALE STEAM DAY

April 6, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Free

Winchester, VA (March 22, 2019) – Handley Regional Library System is excited to announce the expansion of their STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) programs for kids with Fairy Tale STEAM Day on April 6th at 2PM. This special day is an open house style event where families with kids ages 12 and under can participate. Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum will be leading 6 explorative learning stations where literacy meets engineering. Families with younger kids can use the classic fairy tales and nursery rhymes to help solve problems and create positive solutions using STEAM. The library will be featuring those classics available for checkout and will transform into its own fairy tale scene! Families will be able to transform into fairies themselves—the Maryland Hair Fairy will be using her magic to turn kids into fairies with colorful sparkle fairy hair. This event is free and open to the public.

“We are excited to see our STEAM-based programs continue to grow at all loacations, says John Huddy, Director of Handley Regional Library System. “Hands-on learning is vital when it comes to science, and pairing that with literacy makes a winning combination for growth and development with kids.”

Handley Regional Library System also provides two ongoing STEAM-based programs for kids to experience hands-on learning through science and technology in their monthly MakerSpace and BreakerSpace programs.

“MakerSpace is a self-directed activity where kids can make things using hands-on craft and art supplies and their own imagination,” says Katie Moss, Youth Services Supervisor at Handley Library. “Our BreakerSpace program allows kids to explore how things are made by taking items from old toys to old technology apart.”
