PHOTOJOURNALIST AND AUTHOR TALK: THE CLIMB FROM SALT LICK, A MEMOIR OF APPALACHIA

March 20, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Free

inchester, VA (March 20, 2019) – Handley Regional Library System and the Friends of the Handley Library announce a unique author talk coming to Handley Library. Artist and author Nancy L. Abrams will read from her book, The Climb from Salt Lick, A Memoir of Appalachia, and showcase accompanying photographs to help tell the story. The book is a memoir of an outsider coming into adulthood from the perspective of a woman who documents burdens and beauty of a unique location, using words and pictures to tell the rich stories of those around her. The program will begin at 2PM on April 6th in the Robinson Auditorium. The program is free and open to the public. Winchester Book Gallery will provide book for purchase.
About the Author
In the mid-1970s, Nancy L. Abrams, a young photojournalist from the Midwest, plunges into life as a small-town reporter in West Virginia. She befriends the hippies on the commune one mountaintop over, rents a cabin in beautiful Salt Lick Valley, and falls in love with a local boy, wrestling to balance the demands of a job and a personal life. She learns how to survive in Appalachia—how to heat with coal and wood, how to chop kindling, plant a garden, and preserve produce.
