The community is invited to watch, listen, meet and dance along with the Winchester Morris men from the United Kingdom on Monday, October 13th.
The Winchester (UK) Morris men – ritual dancers performing dances that have been danced in the streets of England for more than 500 years – will be coming to the Loudoun Street Mall on October 13th. The group, along with other Morris dancers from the Washington, D.C. area, will entertain the crowd with two informal performances: 2:00 and 4:00 pm. You won’t want to miss this unique experience. Come downtown and follow the sound of jingling bells and clashing sticks.
Later that evening, the dancers will also host an English ceilidh at 7:30 pm in the Union Jack Pub located on the Loudoun Street Mall. This activity provides an opportunity for local residents to meet the visiting Englishmen.
English ceilidhs are described by the Winchester Morris men as “rollicking, super easy dances similar in many ways to square and contra dancing, but easier and more energetic.” The dances will be taught and called by two of the Winchester men who are well known ceilidh callers in the United Kingdom. High energy music will be provided by the DC-area band “Frog Hammer”.
