Museums Opening for Season

Spring is here, and that means Old Town Winchester’s museums are opening up for the season! George Washington’s Office Museum and Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum both open April 1st, while the Old Court House Museum and the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum continue their operating hours.

George Washington's Office MuseumGeorge Washington’s Office Museum: George Washington used a little log building, now the middle room of George Washington Office Museum, as a military office from September 1755 to December of 1756 while Fort Loudoun was being constructed at the north end of town. Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters MuseumStonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum: This Hudson River Gothic Revival style house, a Virginia and National Historic Landmark, was used as headquarters by General “Stonewall” Thomas Jackson during the winter of 1861-1862.  The house contains the largest collection of Jackson memorabilia and also personal objects from members of his staff.  Read more.

Old Court House Civil War MuseumOld Court House Civil War Museum: The Old Court House Civil War Museum is a historic building with graffiti from both Northern and Southern soldiers which also houses a nationally recognized collection of over 3,000 Civil War artifacts.  Situated on the Loudoun Street Walking Mall in Old Town Winchester, Virginia, this Georgian style court house was used as a hospital, barracks and prison by both sides during the War.  Read more.

Season: Winter Hours – November 1 through April 30; Summer Hours – May 1 through October 31
Hours: (Winter) Wednesday-Saturday: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; Sunday: 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Admission: Adults is $5; children and groups of 10 or more are $3 each.  10% discounts are giving to seniors, military, college students, and AAA members with ID.


Shen Valley Discovery MuseumShenandoah Valley Discovery Museum: Our mission at the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum is to ignite creativity, spark curiosity and inspire learning in visitors of all ages by providing a rich variety of interactive, hands-on exhibits and programs that focus on the sciences and mathematics, the humanities, and the arts. Read more.


Season: Open Year Round, Closed on First Monday of Each Month
Hours: Monday-Saturday: 9 am-5 p.m.; Sunday: 1 pm-5 pm; “First Friday” of each month: 5 pm-7:30 pm
Admission: $6 per person.  Free admission is offered to children under 2 and for members.  Admission is also free on the “First Friday” of each month from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
