Author Catherine B. Hollan will present a program on her book, Virginia Silversmiths, Jewelers, Clocks and Watchmakers, 1607 – 1860, Their Lives and Marks. This stunning book is a detailed and welcome addition to the literature on Virginia silversmiths and their trade. The book is over 1,000 pages and provides hundred of individual biographies and critical information and photographs of makers’ marks.
Ms. Hollan will also provide information on silversmith’s business habits during diverse economic conditions. The index provides information by surname as well as specific city and county names; such as Winchester City and Frederick County in Virginia. Her biographical details often contain the exact location of these business as well as the names of other family members belonging to the silversmith’s family.
Catherine Buttery Hollan graduated from Goucher College with a BA in English and math minor, and from Georgetown University with an MS in computational linguistics. Hollan has been researching, writing and lecturing on American silver for thirty years.

The program will be held in the Handley Library Auditorium and is free and open to the public.
