9/11 Tribute – A Community Event

9/11 TributeSunday will mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.  An open ceremony will be held  in Old Town to remember the event, and all are welcome.  Here are the details:

The community is invited to participate in a 9/11 Remembrance Service, beginning at 8:30 am on the Loudoun St. Mall, in front of the Confederate soldier.

  • 8:35 am: Presentation of the colors
  • 8:42 am: Opening remarks
  • 8:45 am: Moment of silence
  • 8:46 am: Ringing of the bells
  • 8:47 am – 1pm: Writing or drawing of tribute letters and notes of reflection, registration for Community Honor Walk and Service Project

Following the Remembrance Service, the community is invited to participate in a “9/11 Community Honor Walk”, at 9:11 am. The walk will take participants through Old Town Winchester, and they will be encouraged to leave an American flag or flower in a designated spot to honor local fire and safety volunteers and staff. The walk route will be lined with signs offering 9/11 facts and quotes.

In the spirit of service and volunteerism, the community is also invited to gather and participate in a “9/11 Tribute Service Project” at Timbrook Park and House from 9:30am – 1pm. Projects will include planting, weeding, and mulching. (work gloves recommended)
